I am Kelsey Mays for cars dot com Volkswagen redesigned the beetle for 2012 and a year later we got a redesigned deal convertible complete with a power clock topping three available engines the bill convertible as always kinda placed style ahead of practicality you’re driving fun and the redesign doesn’t really do much to change that direction we’ll show you why we have a car with the base five-cylinder engine the pair’s the standard automatic transmission the beetle convertible kinda retains the heart of life profile was about six inches longer than the outgoing Beetle convertible the top doesn’t require you undoing any latches to bring it down I’d actually goes down we got down about 11 seconds and back up about 15 including getting windows up that’s very fast %uh you get it down in the end and there’s a booth here that straps in the place pretty easily to keep things tidy in fact unfortunately does take up a lot of your view out the rear view mirror if you put it up as well the rear window pretty tiny as well you know what else is tiny the trunk opening overall cargo volumes about seven cubic feet that’s little less than half what you get in the trunk up the beetle hardtop but still pretty competitive bigger than trucks in cars like the Mini Cooper Convertible the Fiat 500 Cabrio and the top stowe’s in a separate compartments so doesn’t intrude on the trunk space when it’s down unfortunately that opening still very narrow very short require some angling to get your see cases soup and the top where it opens here if it’s been raining direct any extra rainwater straight into the truck hope you liked your groceries what love i can’t.Inside things like painted panels long the dashboard upper doors a real medal for the door handles on the handle for the upper glove compartment kinda nice there it gives way to some lesser quality farther down areas are your arms your elbows follow-on lots of hard kinda cheap plastic there climate controls feel kinda flimsy one editor noted not great stuff in that area despite there being a telescoping steering wheel actually quite a range more than one under found that you either sink too far away from that we’ll with that all the way expanded or when you move up to get the real comfortable you’re sitting too close to the pedals the ergonomic issues Calif go on there’s no center armrest in our cars optional in to feel comfortable despite this car starting at more than twenty five
thousand dollars a we don’t have lights for the vanity mirrors up here out advisers don’t extend it all lot of issues driving experience also seems to fall short the price tag editors agreed to switch the brakes don’t lend much confidence in on the highway the steering is the soupy over assisted mass the car rides for men a clumsy so our way with the busy suspension and more creaking from the top 10 house on Halloween speaking and noise is a lot of it especially with traffic passing nearby on the highway with the top it feels like there’s a window that’s been cracked open the convertible weighs about 200 pounds more than an equivalent hardtop in the five-cylinder engine has a tough time keeping up with that sometimes especially combined with a six-speed automatic it feels like an old-school 6-speed automatic in a few years ago too many gears to choose from can’t make up its mind beetle turbo orbital TDI diesel version %uh convertibles might solve some %uh those issues but we can’t help but think that this car feels a little bit short on refinement especially given its price range some shoppers may not care but consider the competition other convertibles priced in the same range is the beetle convertible because cars don’t need to sacrifice quality on practicality and drivability just for the sake of Attraction and unfortunately it seems like this Volkswagen does a lot about
