In spite of the fact that I do not despise the classic carmakers, and I am really thankful for every opportunity that I have, you surely have noticed that my name is usually connected with exclusive car makers, and I usually get a more luxurious cars for testing. Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz did not want to lend me their new pick-up, because it is not officially being produced yet, that is why I am sitting on a roof of a more “budget friendly” car. Yes, Volkswagen is not a car factory that would fulfil the content that I am interested in, but facelifted Amarok has a lot of uniquenesses, thanks to which I can say, that this is a premium and exclusive pick-up. Firstly, the trunk, in which you can put a whole europalete on width, , as the only one in this segment, because it has exactly 1222 mm. Moreover the hitch, where you can put a trailer with 3,5 tons, which is also very unique. In the basic version, you have the four wheel drive, but with a connectable axle, but in the higher equipments, there is a 4Motion as a permanent drive of all wheels paired with 8-speed automatic gearbox, which is also unique in this segment.Volkswagen claims, that Amarok is the most versatile in its class when it comes to interior… and really, when you sit here, it is really spacious. I will get to the interior shortly, because it really deserves a great deal of attention, but now, let’s move to the most important nature of the facelift, and that is under the massive hood. That is the home of the V6 engine TDI, a well known 3-litre from the Q7, or other Audis or Volkswagens, in my case the stronget 165 kW / 224 PS version. The only six-cylinder among pick-ups on our market. Especially this piece is in the highest equipment Aventura, where you have the standard LED-lights completed with bi-xenons, a very effective 20″ discs, even though I am thinking whether there is a point of having those on a car like this, along with these “rails”, that only make the passage in the terrain worse. In the meantime, I got to Sereď, to the military practice centre, that I have rented for my YouTube money, so I am gonna show you what are the capabilities of this car.Nobody is going to be surprised by the fact that I firstly went to try out this pick up into a big mud, because I rented a military practice centre so it would be a sin not to ty them out, anyways, a few information. From this point of view, you practically cannot tell that
you are sitting in a special car, it looks like a normal SUV, because you do not even have the reduction of the gearbox, you have the classic 8-speed gearbox that you only put to the Drive regime and you do nothing except for going straight. You. naturally, have the shutter of the rear differential and the Off-road regime, so when you press the Off road regime, the car will start to work with the gearbox in a way that you get the feeling that the car is actually walking, so the reduction is being replaced, and the car itself is enough in the automatic regime in the basic, normal situations. You do not have to deal with anything, you only put the car into the driving mode, you se tthe off road regime and the car will follow wherever you wanna go, but you could see that up until now and even now.And when there is a realy crisis, or an extreme situation, you only shut the rear differential or you can also manage here the ESP, that can come handy, considering the conditions. There are naturally a leaf springs, so the car adjusts its behaviour. It is not a SUV, it is comfortable and all, but because it weights 2300kg, which is nearly as much as SQ7, but when you sit in the SQ7, you feel as if you were ina cross-over. And here you wil have the kind of van or truck-like feeling, because the car is tilting to sides and it is mainly caused by the relatively light back of the car and the suspension are loping away. So when you have something loaded on the back of the trunk, the car´s behaviour will change and you can see that the car is dimensioned to carry a bigger load. A big plus is , that even though you will ride this car everywhere, you are climbing the hills and you are falling into many holes, the interior of the car is very quiet in the sense that nothing is squeaking, which is cool considering other cars, even though the car has only about 1000 km, but the fact that you are crossing the axles and you are driving from side to side, nothing can be heard, which is awesome.I have a really steep mountain in front of me, so I will show you the advantages of the Off-road regime. So while going up, so you are walking as if you had a reduction, wile going down, the car is automatically breaking and slowing down. I am only steering the steering wheel or occasionally accelerate, by which I am managin the going down speed. So without pushing any buttons, or setting anything up, the regime off-road is enough. In
front of me is a highlight of my terrain program, a really big gap, I am setting the off road regime, I am shutting down the rear differential… Piece of cake. But let´s have a look from another point of view. Even though this is not the part of the serial equipment, but after the facelift, Amarok has a thingy, a “off-road assistant” and it is kind of a autopilot and it workd in the terrain in such a way. So, you are going, and you are giving a commands, straight, now a bit slower, okay now accelerate a bit, now slower, and now go faster. I think that no other pick-up has this kind of thing, only Amarok. You really enjoy driving through mud, while in normal conditions, you are usualy trying to avoid all this, the holes, puddles.. but when you have a Pick-up with this potential, the best way is to go straight through all these things. Now, I will use my extraterrestrial cut and move to another place. Yes, I have washed the Amarok in a second, switched the weather and I got to the place, where I can really please this car. It is necessary to say, that even thought it is a well known aggregate of Q7, its “intestines” have underwent a lot of changes because of better performance in worse conditions. 3-litre then got a water-cooled turbo, separated cooling circuits and even a function overboost, that can add you a 20 PS for a short time, if you suddenly need more power.Amarok is driving like a locomotive, and it does not matter whether you put a kickdown in 130km/h on a highway or you are driving through mud. And that is because of the 550 N.m that are here form 1400 rpm. Surely, soundproofing and refinement is not on the level of luxurious Q7, but you will probably praise it rather than criticise it when it comes to a car like this. By the way, 80 litre tank was emptied by consumption of 10,5 l/ 100 km, which is a nice number, mainly when I know, that I did not spare the car in the terrain. Moreover, I am totally sure that the consumption was higher with the previous four-cylinder. The base price is 38k €, which is in comparison with the competition really a good price, but the truth is, this fulled-out testing version for 56k is starting to be like and an expensive piece of jewellery, than a practical Amarok. But, this car is the best of both worlds. It is really comfortable and embellished, but you are not gonna kill its potential with all of that. Maybe apart from the side riffles. The question
is, whether someone is going to actually appreciate this high standard.Anyway, feast your eyes. OK, that should be enough! Before we say goodbye, a promised look to the interior. It was really uplifted by extensive facelift, and brought to a whole new level among work pick-ups. Reworked dashboard with a very designed solution on a premium SUV level, a great quality of processing, except for this armrest, which is really unstable. Beautiful quilted multifunctional steering wheel. More than 6” quality colourful display, or electrically controlled and heated leather seats. I have nothing more to say. .
