Enjoying a beetle I am Lex van Garderen and I live in Amersfoort (NL) I always went to events for oldtimers for the fun of it I saw all these old cars and wanted ome for myself I liked the Fiat, the Fiat 500… …I liked the Citroen, Volkswagen… …and the Mercedes. Actually, I liked them all Until a friend said to me: “Lex, we go to Norway in my Volkswagen, a Beetle” “You can come with us.” “You only have to buy one for yourself” I answered him I liked the idea but had to talk with my wife first So I started to look for a VW Beetle So after seing about 7-8 Beetles, I found an ‘oval’ It’s called bij the form of the rear window I bought this one that was build in 1957 I bought an automobile, a real car, a real oldtimer… And I am pretty proud of it It had to be.Actually, I grew up in a Beetle-family My father outworned 7 of them Really outworned until only very little was left of them He used them for his work… …but it also was the familycar, used for trips to the Harz mountains in Germany in the Pentecost weekend It was a real holiday in just 2 days. It was a very nice time This is pure memories. The Beetle we had back then was exactly the same as this one That is what I like The model by itself, the sound of the engine It is so funny . Everywhere I take this car people tell me: “Sir…” “My uncle”,”My aunt”,”Someone else”‘,'”my brother…” Everybody seems to have one once It is so recognisable for many people and that’s so nice It is a nice ride. When you travel in it for a few days, you become a part of it That’s a nice thing about this car I wanted to have one of the older ones But it needed quite some work We had to detach the engine to give it a restoration We had te get the gearbox fixed Everything was very doable. Finding new parts and such All needed to make it a nice car for travelling to Norway With a group of about 30 Beetles we went to the North Cape Together with my wife, all luggage on the backseat and myself we found our way This car was build for many years and in great numbers Delivered in yellow, red, orange. All kind of fancy colours But the early ones were not that exuberantly. Just like this one This one has a real old colour A real classic colour Hitler told Porsche to build a nice car, a Volkswagen, a car for the people One of the requirements was it must be able to drive the highway. So, at least the car needed a maximum speed of 100-120 km/h And it also must be possible
to fight down the Gross Glockner pass.Without any problem And it actually can do that. In first gear or maybe second but that’s about it while climbing mountains Also in Norway… I asked my wife to look where the road was free… ..so I could use the left side to keep my speed… …otherwise I came to a stop and work on my speed all over again With the Luchtgekoelde Volkswagen Club (Aircooled Volkswagen Club)… we will go in june for a 12-day trip We then hop from one hotel to another The first stop will be in Hessisch Oldendorf A small town in Germany, a historic city There will be 5-600 Beetles and Volkswagen Vans… …from all over Europe and even the U.S. All adepts come together, so the whole town will be filled with Beetles That will be a very nice view Then we will cruise Germany and the former Eastern Germany… We will continue through the Czech Republic and Austria……where we will pass the Grossglockner The whole trip is organised by the club There is a medical doctor, a professor and also truckers. All kinds of people All people sharing their crush on Beetles Subtitles:Erik van Gerven .
