install trailer hitch 2005 volkswagen new beetle 24679 – etrailer.com

In Volkswagen New Beetle

Today on this 2005 Volkswagen New Beetle we’re going to show you the draw-tite class one inch to quarter receiver hitch part number two four six seven nine first thing when you do is go ahead and clean up the spare tire area will end up join some holes into the trunk pan so I don’t want to damage the spare tire all right next up we need to get underneath the vehicle and we need to lower the exhaust to do that we’re going to unbolt our exhaust hanger bracket here and here we’ll use the 13 millimeter socket for that now we need to modify the heat shield a little bit here so I’m gonna I’m gonna use some tin snips cut down this edge here I’m just gonna bend it up I won’t use into the hammer here and just kind of help push up the edges up now slowly this is get a little extra clearance with the hitch all right now at this point we can go ahead and put our hitch in position you’ll definitely need to ex set of hands to help do this we’ll take one arm of the hitch up that will go to the passenger side and that’s gonna go over the toe loop on the passenger side we’ll also drop a bolt from the top down which will be a long carriage bolt then we’ll install a block on the bottom with a lock washer and a nut while we do that well on the driver’s side we’ll position that part of the hitch over a hanger we uninstalled earlier I wanna make sure our bracket sits below our hitch and your hitch is up against the frame once we have everything lined up we’ll install the hardware which will be the new metric bolt eight millimeter by thirty-minute millimeters long lock washer and a flat washer now that’s a tight fit up in there so it helped us do that we’re going to use a thirteen millimeter socket and I’m gonna put a piece of paper towel on the end of my socket to give my bolt a little extra grip on there now we have nut as much threads showing to help get it started we have to go through two layers of metal all right now once we have them both loosely installed we’ll go ahead snug them up okay we’ll leave this alone for now we’ll go towards the front underneath the trunk pan and we use our hitch as a template to drill two half-inch holes also be a good idea to have some kind of support underneath the hitch to help hold it up against the trunk pan as well we just kind of pull jack here but anything you can use support it will help also at this point you wanna double check to make sure the hitch is sitting in a straight line as well with the
vehicle then we’ll draw our holes let’s go to the inside of a trunk pan and these are holes we drilled out here’s one here we’ll go ahead and apply some sealant to it help protect the inside from getting wet or getting some exhaust fumes inside as well next lay out our block and a short half inch carriage bolt run the student sheet metal and into the hitch okay this is a hole a drier side we’ll repeat the same process over on the passenger side all right here’s our bolt from the inside we’ll go ahead and install a half inch lock washer and a nut we’ll do that to both bolts we’ll tighten them up and make sure they’re the bolts sit securely into the blocks on the inside and then we’ll tighten them down for good alright now if all our fasteners tightened down we’ll go ahead and torque them down as specified in the instructions then we can go ahead and reinstall the spare tire and you have components in the trunk area then that’ll finish it for our install of the draw-tite class one instant quarter receiver hitch part number two four six seven nine on this 2005 Volkswagen New Beetle you
