install trailer hitch 2010 volkswagen touareg 13220 – etrailer.com

In Volkswagen Touareg

Today on our 2010 volkswagen touareg we’re gonna take a look at and show you how to install the curt custom fit class three trailer hitch receiver this offers the 2 inch opening it’s part number is 1 3 to 2 0 now here’s what the hitch is going to look like once we get it installed on the vehicle really clean simple look all your mounting hardware and brackets are up here behind the bumper fascia here just a small area actually sticking out the tip of it here is just past maybe by about an inch and a half the outer edge of the bumper so that hitch pinhole is gonna be about an inch from the outermost edge so it’s really useful just about any bike rack I can think of is probably gonna fit on here without any kind of interference from the vehicle same with your cargo carriers anything like that as far as that goes it’s a 5/8 pinhole diameter 2 inch by 2 inch receiver tube opening of course you can see your safety chain loops they’re gonna come down here on each side identical this side to this side pretty big and open the chain would hang off there nicely I don’t think we’ll have a lot of issues getting them on and off and as you can see the factory cover has been removed here that’s where if hitch comes in comes right into that factory mounting location overall a nice looking hitch gonna be very practical and very useful it’s not one of those tucks so far up underneath the car that we really can’t get to it now as far as towing is concerned we’re gonna have a 600 pound gross tongue weight rating and a 6,000 pound gross trailer weight rating of course we do want to refer to the owner’s manual of our Touareg to make sure those aren’t too high and we’ll just go off of whatever of those numbers are the lowest now a couple of measurements that will be important in selecting your ball mount bike rack or maybe even hitch cargo carrier will be from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening it’s about 20 inches then from the center of our hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of our bumper it’s about 1 now first thing we need to do is get our taillights removed so we’ll pull the black caps off small screwdriver a pic work good for that set those aside then you’ll see right in behind there we’ve got two Torx bits or torque bolts we use a t20 then take those out then we’re gonna pull out gently on the lens and on the outside here there’s gonna be a couple little kind of catches in there I kind of hold it in place we
kind of pull back on her tab and then wiggle our connector off there now we can do the same thing on our driver side here as you can see one of the caps is already gone so we’re not gonna be too worried about that upper one now we’ll grab our t30 Torx bit and start taking the bolts off holding the rear bumper on now we’ll want to hang on to all the hardware we removed because we will be putting it back in we’re also gonna pull off our little cover here in the middle so we’ll get the ones here in the wheel well and we’ll find two and each of our taillight housings now will just kind of work our edge along here and try to get that loosened up and do the same thing over on the other side we met back just a little bit and then right over here we’ll have a connector that will want to separate and we’ll set it aside so we can reinstall it later now we can use a nineteen millimeter and we’ll come here to the end of our bumper we’ve got two bolts here on the top then also two right down here on the bottom that we’re going to remove only that last one just started a little bit to give us some support wilfy that pull this little piece of wire loom out let’s pull that sensor up we’ll set that right aside now we can take our m12 by 70 millimeter bolt one of the flat washers and one of the lock washers raise our hitch into position and get them started so you’ve got one started there we can do the same thing here on the driver’s side then our hitch will just kind of rest there and give us time to start to six others now we can take just a quick look here just kind of be sure we have our hitch centered with our vehicle and with that set we’ll start snugging down our bolts now we can grab our torque wrench and torque it down to the specification that we can find in our instruction now we’re gonna pull the foam pad gently off of the bumper here you can see there would be a couple little like patches a glue in there gonna take a razor blade or a long screwdriver or something like that just kind of separate it yeah now we’ll return this to the customer the bumper we’re not going to be putting it back on but if they ever want to take off their hitch they’ll need it to go back in right now we can get our sensor put back into place let’s put it right back into the slot it came out of and then we’ll work that wire loom back down into its slot just like that and then we can slide it right back in now we’ll get our fascia back close to in
place here and bring our connector back in just like that we will bring our fascia on around and they guide it back up into position and we’ll start one of our top bolts on each side just to kind of hold it in position for us now we’re gonna kind of guide our edges back into place here I just want to kind of lift up on it get our edges to where they match up and then we’ll start putting our fasteners in the wheel wells here now that everything kind of lined up we’ll put the rest of our fasteners in up here on the top then we can go down to the bottom now we’re gonna take just a little notch out right here we’re gonna come from the edge of the hitch you see it right there straight back to that line we’ll go all the way across that’s where it meets up at the same point here clean up my edges just a little bit now we’ll be able to put in our lower fat all right the top and bottom secure let’s take care of those fender wells now let’s get our taillights put back in here and then if it still has them we’ll put the caps back on that’s all there is to it now that we’ve got everything put back in place that’s going to complete today’s installation of the curt custom fit class three trailer hitch receiver part number one three two two zero on our 2010 volkswagen touareg
