install trailer wiring 2010 volkswagen touareg 118509 – etrailer.com

In Volkswagen Touareg

Today on our 2010 volkswagen touareg we’re going to show you how to install the tow-ready t-one vehicle wiring harness with the 4-pole flat trailer connector part number is one one eight five zero nine now when not in use we can store this right down here out of the way we won’t have to worry about it when we do want to use it all we have to do is bring it out pull out whatever length we’re going to need to make the connection with our trailer or bike rack or cargo carrier allow it to drape right over here and you can see we got a nice cushion right here we won’t have to worry about that doing any damage to our wires now we do want to avoid the striker area right here in the middle so it doesn’t get pinched you see it’s going to come out easily connected when we’re done open the hatch coil that wire back up and I’ll show you a little tip to keep it all together will do is put our plug right there in the middle of it bring the rubber dust cover around and slided arm like that that way we won’t have to worry about it wiggling around too much or getting too too out of hand and too twisted up back here here’s what our wiring kits going to look like it’s pretty straightforward set up we’ve got they call the T connectors here or the that’s part of that t1 wiring kit it’s basically just going to take out our taillight unplug of the factory wiring plug off of it then we can just plug this right in line with it so our taillight will be here our car will be there the green and red that’s going to go over to the passenger side the brown and the yellow that goes over to the driver’s side we’ve got what we’re after what we’re trying to get here it’s our 4-pole trailer connector that will come out near the middle of the vehicle we’ve also got a ground wire that we’re going to be connecting and our 12-volt power wire that we’re going to be connecting now this is going to run from our module box all the way up to the battery source or a 12 volt power source from a vehicle using the black bulk wire that they’ve sent us this is kind of the heart of the system from the brain of the system this is going to be the modulite box it’s basically a module it’s going to go in place as the signals come in to the module it’s going to convert them so it’ll read properly on our trailer this is also going to protect our vehicle from any kind of overloads as well as our trailer then we’re also going to have a hardware kit this has our fuse holder fuse a few
butt connectors even a little self tapping screw for connecting our ground wire if we need it some self sticking foam tape and then some wire ties there sometimes our zip ties will be a little bit short so we might use a few longer ones along the way but we’ll see when we get there now we need to take out our taillight housings on each side and set them set them aside that way we can put them back in later this top caps just messing if yours is like that good if not then we’re going to pop out a little plastic cover there a small screwdriver I’ve just got a pic here all you need to get that out then we can take our t25 Torx bit start backing out our screws now if you’ve got like a small magnet you can use that like I’ve got here to pull those screws out or a pair of needlenose would work good to grab them then we’ll just kind of pull rearward on our taillight assembly here and we can separate our wire connector here by pressing down on that tab that’s right there now we’ll go over and do the same thing for our passenger side now we’re going to unseat our grommet we’ll just kind of pull down on one side of it just kind of roll it out of there just like that we’re also going to unwrap the tape here now let’s go over to the passenger side we’ll do that same thing now we’re going to start making some room here in the back we need to get well basically right inside of here just behind this this little panel we pull this cover off we’ll see there’s a pretty large little little hole in there but it’s blocked here on this backside so what we’ll do is going to pry up on our threshold down here so our clips are popped up we just lift up a little bit there and be able to pull that right back set it in the safe area and then we can work out the edge piece here now the side panel and right up here be a Philips head screw that will want to remove it looks like we’ll have to take off the pad here on the side this little intermediate pad between the actual cover and the outside for that we’re going to pull out the two Torx bit bolts we have two in the rear tie down and two in the front now let’s do the two that we’ve got here on the passenger side now we should be able to grab in each of those holes here at the rear that we just created just kind of take the whole floor section out there just like that now we can take a screwdriver or trim panel removal tool just kind of pop out on our edge here now you’ll see if we pull that back a
little bit we’ve got good access going from outside to inside will be passing our connector right through there now we’ll go ahead and cut the grommet off our factory wire here we just want to make one slit in it we don’t want to tear it up or anything we just just want to get it off here it’s going to go on our new wire harness set that aside so we can use it again now we’ll pull our factory connector back through the hole here to tight squeeze but it will fit have it out here where we can work with it a little bit take the male side of our yellow and brown feed it in you’ll hear that click gives a good push pull and then we’re going to send this back through the hole just like that now our grommet is going to go around these wires now I’ll get poked back in where we took it out just like that now we can tape that up all right now we can take our yellow and brown wire just kind of ease it down and around here to where it comes out right here in our spare tire well area now we got to go through and just pop our cover on this side back into place and kind of pop out on that weather stripping to make sure it fits out nice and good no problems there now let’s not forget to put our little Phillips head screw back in now we can take our red and green end kind of get that stretched out now on this side it’s a little bit easier situation we’re just going to pull out that cover then we’ll be able to reach right in and see where our wire is coming out now as with our other side we’re going to be trimming this one slip right down through as clean as we can get it click it together and then pass it back through and put our grommet back on and we’ll tape it off like before all right at this point so we don’t have to worry about them getting cracked or damaged or something like that we can go ahead and get our taillights put back in so we’ll just slide that factory connector back in get a good click out of it and push pull and all we have to do is line our taillight back up then we’ll put our screws back in to hold it and we’ll go do the same thing for the driver’s side and put it back into place and on this side remember we just had the one cap now we can start tucking our red and green wire away we’ll put it right behind our side panel here just kind of get it tucked in there that way we can run right along our threshold area and let it come out right in there let’s go ahead and put our threshold on now we’re going to get our
ground wire in place we’re going to be going on the metal right here behind here’s where that little air compressor is right here on the flat spot now I’m going to use the spot that’s indented slightly because I want to mount my box right here I don’t want to be in the way of that so we’ll go right in that little indented portion we’ll take this provided self-tapping screw I like to make my hole without my ring terminal on then put it on and run it on down this little wiggle it make sure it’s tight we’re good now for mounting our box we want to use a flat surface as we have here use some rubbing alcohol and really clean that off well let that evaporate for just a second let me pull the tape off the back of our box so it’s going to have like a connector or a not a connector but a have a protective cover over that foam tape looks good squeeze it into place and our gray connector can slide right in the back now what I’m going to do is just take a small drill bit I’m going to drill a hole right in our little grommet here kind of clear that out and we’re going to be able to pass our wire right through that slot it’s really ideal location I’m going to use a pool wire to get it out so what we’re going to do you can use a coat hanger or something like that I just got a piece of airline tubing and I run it up there just kind of push as much as you got kind of on through you could even use like thick wire like a bailing wire or something we’ll just leave that hang out there let’s connect that bulk wire we’ll just grab our wire we’re going to strip the end back give it a twist and it’ll go right into our butt connector here a good pool then we’ll just wrap it up a tape for good measure now we can take the other end of our 12 volt wire slide it right into our fish wire and our airline whatever we’re using then we can go to the underside and start pulling that through now you can see it’s going to come out kind of right here above the the rear differential let’s just kind of pull it through just work it easy and then you can see right here we’ve got this half shaft that’s going to run over I don’t want it close to that so I’m going to go right over the round tube here just go up and over there that’s nice that keeps us plenty high up over that now we can jump in this kind of panel here that runs up towards the front now I got to about here and I got hung up so what I’m gonna do to use a Torx bit back it out then I can pull this
down oh look here it is right there get kind of a new grip on it and keep sending it up the direction we want it get back in pull through like that and we’ll put our screw back in the back take this one will be easier if we just pull that screw out here as well now I’m going to go right up over the AC bracket that’s right here let’s kind of run that up the direction we want it now is notice right here is the end of the pull wire that we are using we want to grab it kind of back in this area though if we can and before I get too far I’m going to direct it right over here towards this positive battery terminal post we’re going to use that to make our connection we’re going to route it right over here to our 12 volt power source pull out whatever slack we might have there then once I get it up here I like to anchor it off so I’ll use you know one of the hoses or one of the lines here to give me a really good anchor point so we don’t have to worry about it fading back underneath the vehicle at any point spring or zip tie around or wire around there anchor point just close it up I’ll give us a really nice anchor point so we won’t have to worry about our wire coming out underneath the vehicle at any point now we’re going to break grab our fuse holder a ring terminal and a butt connector we’re going to cut our fuse holder at about 4 o’clock position that’s going to give us a longer end that’s going to run to our black wire the shorter end that’ll run right up to our post strip each end off but connector on the longer side ring terminal here for other the shorter side a little tape around our ring terminal there and we’ll grab our black wire here what I like to do is just put one coil in it to give us a little bit of extra room in case we ever need to make any changes snip off the extra strip it back we’ll put our butt connector on get it crimped I’m also going to take a second to wrap that one up we’ll pull the cap back off of our connection there we’re going to remove the stud that’s sticking up right here should work a lot like a bolt so just lefty loosey righty tighty back that off let’s bring our ring terminal right underneath there because that’ll be cleaner pull that up and then go right over that terminal with it and that will go right back on put that back secured close our cap now we’re just going to take our extra wire here put one coil in it and then we’ll add a couple zip ties to hold everything together this we
can just tuck it down kind of get it out of sight it doesn’t have to be out of sight but you get it tucked down there right really don’t even notice it’s there just like that now we’ll just put our fuse you get our fuse push down in there put our cap on now we’ll go test it out make sure everything’s working now to test out our ground we’ll use the clamp from our test light we go right onto that then what we’re hoping to see is a constant steady signal from the brown wire we want a flashing one from the yellow wire that’s for our left blinker for our right blinker will want a flashing one from the green wire and then for our brakes we’ll want a constant signal from both the yellow and the green all right that’s great everything’s working as it should just tidy it up a bit just want to be sure that we have enough room to clear our spare tire and also our air pump and then we’ll bunch this up here you
