I don’t envy you, I really don’t. Apparently, the majority of people lease cars that fall within a low tax level. And since the Passat is a car that’s often leased… …I thought it’d be a good idea to drive one that falls within that lower tax level. VW have some on offer… …and I chose a TDI. It gets 105 hp from its 1.6 liter engine… …not too shabby. But it’s so slow, it makes me slow too. I just feel my body slipping into some sort of hibernation… …when trying to accelerate. I’m being a bit harsh, it just has to get going. In the right rev range it’s quite okay. But gosh, the suffering people are willing to go through… …to save a couple of bucks on taxes every month. If you choose a car on a low tax level, I think that’s a sign to your boss……saying your career isn’t going anywhere. This is the completely revamped Passat. That’s a bit cynical. It does look totally different. Unless you compare it to other VW products… …’cause than you’ll recognize the VW design. It very much looks like the Tiguan, Touran, Yetta… …Golf, Touareg… …Polo, Caddy, Transporter… It may seem completely new, but it really isn’t. Its dimensions; length, width and height… …and things like its roof line… …are exactly the same as on the previous Passat. It really is a very thorough facelift. And that’s not new for Volkswagen, they also did it with the Golf VI. This also is the Passat VI, or is it VII? I’m not sure. Does it matter? This is a base version with fancy wheels… …and it does look quite nice. It doesn’t drive me crazy, but it also isn’t repulsive. We have to give VW credit for… …implementing new, or relatively new, technologies in this Passat. It’s efficient and nice stuff. All petrol engines have turbos for example. There are a 2-liter, a 1.8 liter and a 1.4 with 122 hp! And there also is a 3.6 V6 with 300 hp but what’s the use? Of course you can also get the Passat with a dual-clutch DSG transmission. But we’re driving a manual today. There also is a gear change indicator… …that suggests things that I think can only go wrong. For example; we’re driving uphill in fourth… …while doing, let’s say, 50 mph. Then it says I can go to sixth gear. When I do that, the engine almost stalls. That’s how bad it is. But apparently that’s very economical. For a little while that is… …because after that it says I should go back to fifth. Let’s go this way. You keep changing gear,
it’s a good exercise. It keeps you busy. This is what you get from driving a Passat for a day. Huge muscles. Let’s mention a positive thing; it does have loads of space. Big trunk, lots of space on the rear seats.Normally I put my seat all the way back… …and in the Passat I don’t have to. Check it out, it can still go back. The interior is like the rest of the car; it’s all fine. So it’s pretty boring. It’s grey with black and there are some aluminum accents. And there’s a little clock that reminds me of those cheap wall clocks. It’s very functional but also very ugly. The best thing about this car is that I can hand it in later. That’s mean, ok, it’s very mean. They have sold 15 million Passats to date. So apparently it makes a lot of people happy. And it is quite a good car. It just isn’t very exciting. If you do get one, also get a nice hobby…..or an exciting wife. Or man, if that’s your thing. Go play checkers, go fishing, nitting or flower arranging. Make sure you can use your creativity in your hobby. What you don’t use for your car you can use for other stuff. .
