Trailer Hitch Installation – 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen – Curt

In Volkswagen Jetta

Today on our 2013 volkswagen jetta sportwagen we’re going to take a look at and show you how to install the curt custom fit class one trailer hitch receiver this is an inch and a quarter opening it’s part number of c1 1072 all right here’s the hitch once you get it installed on the vehicle overall it’s a nice-looking class 1 hitch it has a pretty wouldn’t say a heavy duty look to it but a real real strong look to it it’s got the little bit extra here in the end that helps you out with your hitch immobilizers going around there it’s a class one so going to be good with the cut 2 bike racks things like that small cargo carriers or light duty towing it’s rated for a 200-pound maximum tongue weight rating a 2,000 pound gross trailer weight rating so not terribly heavy setups there also you need to refer into the jettas owners manual just to make sure you can handle that if not go off whatever those numbers whatever of those numbers are going to be the lowest as far as installation goes there’s no real modifications that you’ll make on the car on this one shield on the side as you’ll see we can leave that off or what we did was just trimmed out a little notch for it to just slide back in really easy it’ll take you a few minutes you know you’ve got some bolts and stuff you got to get in there a little bit of sealant that you put around one of the locations to keep your car free of dirt and debris and water exhaust fumes things like that but overall not terribly difficult to do it’s going to offer us a half inch pinhole that works great with any of the anti-rattle devices hitch pin locks things like that and on both sides you’re going to have your safety chain connections whether that’s for helping to strap some items down or maybe connecting your trailer safety chains to and keep that secured in case of emergency as you can see it’s get a round tube on it it’s a little bit softer than what we saw from the other hitches so it kind of gives it a nice clean look and goes with the lines of the car now a few measurements it’ll be helpful in selecting your ball mount or maybe bike rack will be from the ground the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening we have about 10 inches then from the center of the hitch pinhole the outermost edge of the bumper it’s about five and to begin our installation we need to get this panel removed from the bottom side of the VA we’ll have three Torx screws here on the outside to remove and then the
two kind of like hex nuts here these you can almost turn them by hand you might need a pair of pliers let’s turn those to loosen and then back these bolts out and we’ll pull that down and right underneath is going to be the vapor canister will have three screws in it that we’re going to take out as well about three bolts rather got one too then the third one kind of tucked in a little bit they’re just going to pull that down and out and then we can see our access holes we’re going to be using our two rear most holes here going up through our access hole here we’re also going to be using one hole right up here on the side it’ll be kind of an elongated hole on the outside of the path of your frame rail now we’ll be using this hole and this hole for our spacers and bolts to come down through will be getting a man right through this hole using fish wire then also the one located right up here on the passenger side frame rail we’re going to be removing this plug once we get inside that’ll be our other access hole bolts going to stick down and a bracket is going to come down and be bolted there then we’re also going to remove the two bolts that hold our exhaust hanger in place now before we remove those exhaust bolts let’s get a strap put around the underside what we want to do is support our exhaust so it’s not hanging too far down sometimes it’s necessary sometimes it’s not but it’s a good idea here just to take some of the stress off of the system there’s also an exhaust hanger right here that will be pushing off I’m going to use a little bit of spray lubricant on it make it a little easier to get off of there go it’ll take down those two bolts so we’ll rotate our hanger kind of down and out of the way well start getting her hardware in place now to bring our hardware through we’re going to do is bring one of the fish wires right up through the hole we plan to use and then how the access hole that we saw earlier and then place the spacer block and 7 16 inch carriage bolt right up on there we can kind of feed those in separately and then just pull it right down and out we’ll do that one of them the one just in front of it there all right now we’ve got that side set let’s go into the trunk area and get that one set to now we’ll start gaining access to the area we need here in the trunk do that we need to get rid of the covers and also the spare tire and toolset that’s in here here we’ll remove the gray plug like that
we’re going to be putting down you see the large circle it’s going to go right down and provide as our connection point before we do that we’re going to go all the way around the hole here with some silicone type sealant this is going to keep any water maybe exhaust from getting into the passenger compartment here so put that around drop our disk on top then around that square hole we’re going to do the same thing they’re both to go down and then clean it up a little bit of the excess here now we’re going to get our hitch raised up into position we’ll need an extra set of hands to kind of help us out with this and what we want to do is get the flange started over the exhaust there then I’m going to bring both my fish wires down through my hitch and then we’ll kind of use those and guide it on up in place now we’ll back one of our fish wires off of our bolts and we’ll put on one of our 716 such flange nuts now be careful as you do this not to push your bolt back up inside the frame then we can come right into our middle bolt here this one’s going to get a half inch flange nut alright that should hold it in place while we take care of the two exhaust bolts now we can rotate the exhaust hanger back up and tips original location let me thread our new m8 flange bolts right up into the old exhaust hanger locations there alright a little snug goes down just a little bit let’s get our next seven sixteenth inch bolt in place or nut rather and now we need the fish wire through our last connection point through that passenger side hole that we’ve seen now to the end of that will add on another one of our spacer blocks and our final seven 16 th carriage bolt its like before will feed these in separately and pull them up to our home location once we’ve got that out we’ll kind of hold it in place and pull our fish wire off and then put our last flange neta all right now we can go through and torque all of our fasteners down to the specifications listed in the instructions alright with everything torque down let’s get our evap canister put back in alright let’s trim out this section we need to accommodate our hitch here on our under panel what we’re going to do is take out a little notch here to allow our hitch to slide in as we put this up into place we’re going to come from this connection point here which is the rear most corner of the vehicle and four inches and we’ll make a mark there and with that mark from the very bottom of
our trim panel we’re going to come up five inches and when we cut the very narrow section out here I’m going to go about three-eighths of an inch we’re going to take out that inside section there we’re just going to take a little cutting wheel here just go up across and back down hey hey we’ll just clean up any little hangers with a razor knife there now those measurements they give might not be exactly precise so just fit it up there and see if it goes if not we’ll make a little adjustment wherever needed let’s place it I put that slot around there first i’ll just kind of slide it rearward well we get it up into position here this looks pretty good there we got our two hex nuts will choose that to hold this up into position for right now alright doesn’t quite want to go all the way over so let’s make one more adjustment to it well take this outside edge off just a little bit further there we go both those are lighting up good now so their whole there and they’re in there all right let’s get the three are out the outside though well take a second here to finish up underneath the vehicle just by reattaching our exhaust hanger I get a little spray lubricant won’t hurt anything and then just slide it right on there we’re also going to take off our safety strap now let’s head up and put all the stuff back in the trunk that’s going to complete today’s installation of the curt custom fit class one trailer hitch receiver part number c 1 107 tube on our 2013 volkswagen jetta sportwagen
