Trailer Wiring Harness Installation – 2009 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen

In Volkswagen Jetta

Today tour 2009 volkswagen jetta sportwagen will be installing the curt upgraded circuit protected tail light with converter hardwire kit with a 4-pole flat end part number 56 146 k.i.t so now we’ll gain access to our wire for our trailer connector I’ll pull it outside the vehicle and will close our hatch on down making sure we don’t have the wire closed and the latch right there so when we want to use our wire connector we just have to have it out like that now when we’re done telling your trailer all I have to do is just open up our hatch again Tucker wire down here on the inside and we can close our compartment back up and it’s nice and hidden all right we’ll begin our installation here by opening the hatch of our vehicle now we will gain access to our taillight connectors to do so we’ll just pop out this panel here just like so the other side is a little bit different it’s got this access panel here you can fold down after the tabs are undone hours are already loose then pull back here on this tab will have access to the wires here I’ll take our included circuit tester here you can’t actually test which wire does what function without the lights are plugged in because this vehicle uses a can bus system so you have to have the lights connected you can back probe the connector and find out which one does what in our case this top wire here on the driver’s side is our tail light wire so we’re going to start our connection here with that one for our tail light signal for a trailer connector so we’ll slide our polluted t-tap over that top wire here just like so and then we will slide our brown wire in which is for our tail lights into the quick connector and will crimp it together just like so now when we take our test light you can see we have a good connection all the way through so we’ll fold this connector over now we’ll do our left turn signal it’s this black and white wire which is next to the bottom same thing as we do the other one will slide our T tap on and then we will install the yellow wire onto that and will crimp it into place again we’ll test it with our test light we see it flashing so we don’t have a good connection so we’ll close that off all right now if an assistant holding on the brake pedal we can see the second wire here from the top that’s black and red is our brake signal so we’ll tap into that one so we’ll take our Quick Connect here again slide it over a black and red wire like so I’ll take the red
wire going to our converter box and we’ll slide it into position and will crimp it into place now we’ll take a green wire here and will route it over to the passenger side for a right turn signal first take our threshold out pull this panel back a little bit here singer wire through just like that so I have our right turn signal on now you can see it’s the black and green wire here that’s second from the bottom so we’ll tap our wire in there with our t tapp crimp it in place so you see we got a good turn signal oh so we’ll seal or connector up now we can handle our ground wire and our power wire so we’ll install our self tapping screw go through the eyelet of the ground wire and go to the body vehicle okay that’s a good solid ground connection now now we’ll take one under the black wire that comes with a kit and we’ll feed it out through the panel of the vehicle let’s drivers side just like we did with the green wire going on the passenger side strip off one under the wire that quarter inch or so take one included yellow butt connectors put it over the wire will crimp it into place the other ends will go to the black wire of our converter box here will slide that in like so and will crimp it down as well make sure a nice tight connection and we’ll wrap this it back up with electrical tape take a double-sided tape that’s included with the kit fuel with one side stick on the back of our converter box like so kill the other end off and we’ll slide it back behind this panel here press against the body of the vehicle now it’s nice and secure and head out of the way we’ll check our wires in there like so leaving our trailer connector hanging out install that in the back into position we just tuck them back in here for when we want to use them they’re easy to get to but we’re not using them or talk up out of the way now we can go work on reinstalling our panels here in the trunk I’ll do this one in the passenger side just like that alright with their side panels back in and the weather stripping back over them and push down on our trim piece here in the middle and get our weather stripping back over it as well sometimes you need to take a trim panel tool and help lift up on it while you push it down or a panel push back down just work over weather stripping back up over it now we’ll just poke a hole in this grommet right here and we’ll push our other end of a wire through once you have a few inches of it 30 will go
underneath your vehicle through our wire came out right next to the cross bar here of our hitch so we’ll just pull it on down all the way and we’ll start routing it forward I’ll go ahead and do that and then I’ll show you where I have it secured once it’s routed just make sure you avoid any sources of heat or moving parts all right so we routed it long based in the spare tire well here up over the rear crossmember and rear sway bar have it zip tied here to this brake line we go across over to the parking brake cable here have it secured along that and a couple spots just to keep it away from the exhaust then we go up underneath this panel and we wrapped it around this crossmember bullet here in the front and back out just so what pull out now between the battery the master cylinder will drop down our pull wire I’m just using an old piece of a airline tubing here you use a coat hanger something of that nature something that’s stiff just to help you pull the wire and up all right here’s where our pull wire came down so here’s our wire just tape it up to it make sure we get it nice and tight so doesn’t get snagged on anything while we pull it up okay now we’ll go back up all right now we’ll take our pull wire here we’ll pull it on up make sure you get all the slack out of it and we’ll remove our tape off her pull wire all right so we’ll take our wire here cut off our excess right about here should be good strip back about a quarter inch or so of the insulation take our included fuse holder here chip off some more insulation take another one of these yellow butt connectors that’s included well install the yellow buck connector over reviews holder crimp it in place on the wire other end of the butt connector will go to our wire that we routed from the back of the vehicle sort it in there crimp it down as well take our electrical tape again wrap up our butt connector chip off a bit more from a fuse holder in here then we’ll install a ring terminal onto the wire stick that on and will crimp it into place now we’ll take a 10 millimeter socket and remove the positive terminal nut from our battery install our ring terminal over that will reinstall our nut so get it started tighten it down we’ll take our included taniam fuse insert it into the fuse holder and will close our cover up over it now we’ll plug our 4-pole flat trailer tester in here if you want to get one of these its part number I 26 on our website now we’ll have an
assistant run the functions of our lights and we’ll test them out make sure everything works well happen by start by turning the headlights on as you can see the light that goes the brown wire lights up which shows that our tail lights will work on our trailer now our assistant will turn them off just like so we’ll have them step on the brakes as you can see our yellow and our green light show up for our brake lights now we’ll have them do a left turn signal and just yellow wire works which is our left turn signal having to the right and just light the ghost the green wire works which is our right turn signal so now we know all of our trailer lighting functions will work properly and that completes our installation of the curt upgraded circuit protected tail light with converter hardwire kit with 4-pole flat part number 56 146 k.i.t on our 2009 volkswagen jetta sportwagen
