Beautiful, scenic region at the foot of Polana mountain is a very distinctive part of Slovakia. In the past locals dealt with cattle, sheep and processing wood. They needed more fields and pastures, therefore they grubbed a large part of forests, fields called “oraciny” were added and thus a new, farming character of land under the Polana mountain emerged. Growing grain, sheep rearing and “bryndza” cheese production has lasted to this day. And so have a tough life, hard work and vagaries of the weather. So I’m going to test how the new, face lifted Volkswagen Amarok would fit in here. Unbelievable this six-cylinder! It’s a paradox but these days, pickups are providing me with the automotive pleasures which I was accustomed to in, more or less, luxury class. Welcome again to the next Garage TV video.I’m testing the new face lifted Volkswagen Amarok which has a six cylinders under the bonnet a new front end, new equipment… It’s basically stuffed with everything what you can get, starting from electric seats, but let’s move on to what’s important: This is probably the first pickup which I did not want to take offroad. Usually, when I have such a car, ok Korytarky, when I have such a car first thing that comes to my mind is to go into a field and do some damage, mischiefs there. If it wasn’t for a friend who called me to help him transport something, I would perhaps not even address it. And he told me to take the first right in Korytarky, over a narrow panel road.Perhaps not too narrow for this Amarok… but let me show you one other thing. I’ll accelerate on this panel road. And who knows this road in Korytarky can imagine that driving at 60 km/h on it with such a wide car is no fun but what can this chassis can do is unreal. And he said to turn right again on its end so that’s correct and a sharp left near a cross. Too bad the Volkswagen Motorsport left the WRC because with such a car, people, this pickup is providing me with unbelievable automobile experience It’s glorious! I have to hold my horses here, cause there are some houses long story short, when Volkswagen said in their press release.. wait, now left, probably … when they said that this is a premium driving class in terms of driving, they were right. Ok, the first house, Fabia, here it is. All right. That’s him Howdy, did you find the way? Sure, I did.So reverse here. Won’t these guys bite me? Listen, this is
unbelievably comfortable, this car. It even looks good. And listen, wait, that was START STOP system. It’s a six cylinder and it’s glorious! Cool, wait I’ll attach the trailer. Wait, are we taking the trailer? Let’s take it. How much you have to move? It’s a ton and 400 kg, I doubt we can fit in here. All right, I do have a trailer ball, as I told you. Then let’s do it. Wait, wait, I’ll show you something. I haven’t experienced this in any car before. Sit over here. How to reverse to a trailer like a boss. Show me. The parking sensor beeps when it’s wet But look at this – I can see the ball I haven’t seen this in any car, even when I tow race cars. You know, when the trailer is full and you need to attach it alone you can reverse right to the ball how great is this? I wish I had this when I reversed with our tractor. How great is this? Like a boss! OK, let’s load it. Hook it and we’ll be on our way. Listen Rasto, you know you’ll need to work a bit today, right? My back is little weaker at the moment, so you’ll have to. Who told you to jump? Well… I though these dogs would tear me apart. No way they would! They pretend to be badass at first, trying to impress. You know, a Bratislava plate number. Yeap, they saw that probably, too. I shouldn’t scratch the small wheel here. Navigate me, straight on, right? Straight on. Look, with this six cylinder the trailer goes like this. I put all terrain tires on, but I thought the road would be worse, because of what you told me. Hold on yet, I do have some secret missions for you. Ok, all right. A substantially more massive and bigger trailer would suit this Amarok better, not such a “barrow” cause this six cylinder pickup can tow up to 3.5 tons.Naturally, in that case a BE driver’s licence is required. Gentlemen, this way around? Aah, I was looking forward to going in reverse. It can be open like this and it goes all the way to the back. Good thing is you can pull it back, like this. They thought it through well. And it’s attached here so doesn’t go out of reach, right? Yep, it doesn’t, because it can be locked. This is the only pickup where you can fit EURO pallet breadthways. That way you can it can carry 500 kg over the rear axle and another 500 kg behind it.And so can the roller lid be shut now. Excellent boys, and I’ll go, too. Should we want that, we could protect the load against the rain. Good.
Excellent. OK, we’ll leave the trailer where you picked me up and with this we’ll have another mission. As you say. It will be good with this covered. It can even rain or whatever. Good. One could watch the work even for hours, but Amarok also deserved few looks. It has a new front grill under which you naturally expect a bigger engine.Three liter. And a six cylinder. The interior, however, has nothing to do with heavy duty. Well, it does – one thing. It’s assembled in a way that nothing creaks, indeed. Neither off road, nor on a bumpy road. An example even for today’s luxury cars. Concerning the interior, I believe this is the most convincing Volkswagen. I was, however, asking myself a question if this is not a little too much. Electric seats Ergo Comfort? So be it! But a leather tapestry Napa? To have Amarok look this way, it needs Aventura option selected which also has multifunction steering wheel, previously mentioned leather, bi-xenon head lamps, a sat-nav, winter set, a digital player and a bit different roll bar than these one. But a lid one as well. Part of the equipment are also hideous step bars that don’t suit the car, are impractical and are always in the way. On the other hand, there is also a useful bed lining Durabed. So far, everything looks splendid, impressive and luxurious. Question is, how will Amarok do off road? It doesn’t have low range gears, but it has an automatic gear box a back locking diff, and offroad tires.Rye, covered by optional roller shutter that costs 3200 EUR, could be moved over a tarmac road but why not to take a shortcut – an old country road? What’s unusual, it has an eight speed gearbox and they don’t use low range gears, simply the automatic gearbox can handle it all. But you know, it has 550 Nm so… This is a combination of rocks and mud. Sure, it’s good, actually. You just have to be sure if we are on the right road. But listen, the all terrain tires – you can really feel the thick rubber. But most of all – the back sits down nicely under the load. It will be job for these tires. I was a bit ambitious when I thought I could do this with my Peugeot. I guess you were. But here we are in the field, bro.And I fear a ploughed field as a devil. And now? This is one navigation competition, I tell you. But the car goes nicely. It does go nicely, indeed. Wait, here we have to slow down because of the fence. You don’t want to
trespass? Yes, the sign says “Don’t enter” and I’m afraid we could enter. I didn’t think it would be such an adventure. You didn’t either, did you? No, cause I’m used to my ways of doing it. But this drifts!! 4 motion drive train with inter-axle differential Torsen and without low range gear is unique even in this class. Driving it on mud and snow it resembles a compact car and it happy-tails which is advantage on roads and a new dimension in handling a pickup. Therefore I was curious if it won’t think too much and hesitate in the terrain, what road AWDs often do. Wait, it seem to end here … Or where to now? Left here, up the hill. Ok, left and up. Listen, this is a place where I could play a bit. If this is a short cut, we shouldn’t arrive too soon. Have a look from the outside how will it spin its wheels.Ok, gimme a sec, I’ll take my jacket. First I’ll try to steer it here well the drive train is different here comparing with other pickups… But it will be a slide here on this mud…because it has a Torsen differential, so to say permanent AWD… Unbelievable! Now I would like to know if all my wheels are spinning. I just wish not to get hung on those step bars. I will try to lock the back diff next, but I’m not sure if it will help Because it is a pure sliding on this mud. So, let’s select the back diff lock… Ok, ok, … this is the advantage that I can rev it like this on the mud. Oh, sheee. How did it go? It had a bit problem with it, hadn’t it? Well, a problem, did you notice the mud? And did all my wheels spin together? All of them did at the same time. But actually the diff lock helped me get through. I will just reverse here, but you better be up here, ok? Or will we not make it again? Nah, you can do it. Give it the throttle. I don’t want it to end up like with the pitcher (old Slovak saying – You use a pitcher to carry water again and again up until it breaks.) Yes, I will slide my back over here, nice, just how I wanted.I have the axles crossed but now I want to know if the diff lock works. Don’t get stuck on the belly here. Come here, let’s go on. The cross axle over there was not a problem for it. No, listen, the diff lock is enough. Up we go. You see, the back-stabbing mud! But first thing: the diff lock helped me enough because the rear is powered continuously and I can twist it, you see? It slides but goes its own way. Beautiful,
beautiful, and now to the right here. But the AWD doesn’t think too much. No, it doesn’t You know I thought that after all those nice roads, the Amarok will come here and that it would be fail a bit – sort of mainstream, but what the car can do… But there may be other thing why is that. Our back is fully loaded and I think that helped as well. So, the rye! First thing to have is trunk full of rye. Six cylinder diesel with eight speed gearbox gives the Amarok a whole new dimension of driving. Along with the suspension it could be a upper intermediate class car. Three liter six cylinder made by Audi has torque of 550 Nm and runs on 10l of diesel. Sometimes 11. And now you come on these roads, that are roads, not so frequented by the way, and what do you say about the suspension? And about the fact that if we didn’t have our stuff in here there would be complete silence. It’s an iron. And today, when every suspension is pseudo artificially stiff, there’s this proper car. We saw it even has leaf springs, right? But to succeed in tuning it like this with leaf springs… I can’t imagine that. Make right here. Right? Yep, this way here. Mount Ratica. A mountain prize – so some sort of cycling race took place here. It does – the one around Polana mountain. Wait there’s a church here. Swell, brother Anton is waiting. Can we go a bit further? Wait, a bit more, a little more. We can park it here. Ok, let’s go. Greetings, greetings. Hello, I’m Martin. I’m Rasto Chvala, brother Anton, correct? Correct, brother Anton. Well then, because this bloke is telling me – you’ll see it’s a beautiful place, so …probably it is. It is beautiful, indeed, if you were here some hour, hour and half ago, the inversion was lovely. While we were loading the fog ascended, true. Please, be welcomed to this place. Many thanks, where can we unload the cargo for you? The freight found its way to the stables and for us it was just another way how to test the Amarok in the real peasant environment. My summary is as follows – should the Range Rover transform into a pickup, it would be car like this. All righty, mission accomplished. Yes. Please, take care. Thank you so much. Amarok fits the environment under the Polana mountain completely, because it represents two cars in one. And that is perhaps the only essential explanation of its price. Lot of time will pass till such cars will be driven
by farmers under Polana, but I do wish for it. Let the car used for work is also a reward for the hard job. And by the way – this is how it looks over the Mount Ratica when the fog is gone.
