Well, this feels like just another Golf… But it’s the Golf GTI, edition 35. But as expected, they managed to make something good out of it! They started the production of the Golf GTI in 1976… and I have to say that the story behind that is pretty good: At first, they decided to limit the production of the GTI to 5000. But so far, they managed to build 2 million of them! So for Volkswagen, that’s a reason to celebrate! Because, 35 years ago the first GTI drove off the production line. And with this anniversary model you get: 235 HP, for about 5000 USD more than the regular GTI. But I have to say, you get some cool extra’s for this money: extra horse power is always welcome, so you get 235 HP instead of 211. You also get 300 Nm torque instead of 280 Nm. So everything together, the GTI 35 becomes a little bit faster and goes to the 60 mph in 6,6 seconds. Even with the extra power, a speed limiter is not necessary as the top speed is set at 154 mph. Or you must be able to find a long and straight road downhill… I have to say, this is not a Golf R killer. The Golf R has far more HP and is another second faster to the 60 mph. Another difference is that the Golf 35 is front wheel driven, unlike the Golf R. But you get more: Xenon lights, a golf ball as gear shift,… an aerodynamic front bumper, another rear bumper and sideskirts that are taken from the Golf R. But, to be honest, all those details make the Golf 35 look a lot better and more sporty! The car also comes with tinted rear windows, so basically you get everything that you could possibly want on your GTI! I´m hungry and driving a Golf GTI, so I have no choice but to go through the MacDrive.. Volkswagen wanted to make sure that everybody would recognise your GTI 35, so they placed `35 badges´ all over the car. You also get a diamond shape interior, which completes the traditional picture of the GTI. And last but not least: 18 inch wheels in a special design. And because most people that order a GTI take it with 18 inch wheels, Volkswagen did a great job here.. The Golf GTI 35 is available in 3 colours: white, red and black metallic. But, I would like a talk with the people interested in a Gofl GTI, and in particular the ones interested in a black one: The most popular colour, actually the two most popular colours: black and dark gray, cover 70% of all the GTI’s sold! I mean, 70% of all the GTI’s are solled in dull colours. Oke, it looks good,
but…Come one: try something more exciting like red, white, yellow or something crazy like British racing green. I’m not sure if Volkswagen offers all those colours, but a little bit more fantasy can’t hurt. The funny thing with the special editions is that you can start collecting them: there is an edition 20, an edition 25 and an edition 30, which we tested before by the way. The edition 30 had 230 HP, so it’s not going up very fast. And now they came up with edition 35. So from now it’s just five years of waiting for the next anniversary model based on the GTI.Maybe it’s fun to take a look in the future: the GTI has been developed for 35 years and… started with 110 HP, and we’re now on 235. Let’s say we move forward another 35 years: by then, if history continues, a Golf GTI will have 500 HP! I’m sure that I will find the time to take you on a tour with that Golf GTI! .
