29 million were build in a period of 38 years. That counts only for the Volkswagen Golf. Perhaps not the most important VW historically, but probably economically. We’ve seen six generations, so this is the seventh. Some said that the 5th and the 6th were too much alike. The 7th though is completely new. Is has a new platform, too. The MQB platform, like the new Audi A3 and Seat Leon. Golf owner have kids, so I want to know how it is in the back. Well, it’s very spacious. Thanks to the longer wheelbase. And Golf owner shop at Ikea, so the trunk is important as well. Very clever. This part fits under the floor. Or so they say. It must fit. VW said so. Here it goes. Admit it. Billy and Björn both fit in here. Together. If you’re about my age, you might remember the Urban Heroes. They had a hit with ‘Never change a winning team’. Although this car is completely new, a blind man would recognize this as a Golf. Thanks to that big, folded C-pillar. But also other details. VW don’t want to change it radically, and they’re right. 29 million people love this car. Hey, there’s and old one. Let’s compare. I said evolution, but they are quite different, though. The old headlight look friendlier. The grille looks sharper. The rear also looks different. Look at the taillights. The new Golf is steeper compared to the old one. Sportier. The interiour looks fresher. With a lot of black gloss. The setup is very logical. VW are proud of some new gadgets. Like this touch screen. If you approach it, you’ll get the menu on the screen. I don’t know how that works. It does not respond to a pen. Must have to do with warmth, so what if I entry the car in winter with cold fingers? Tonight I’ll ask the people from VW. The seats and position are fine. You can make long trips without getting tired. The satnav is not very ergonomic. Too much menu’s and the instructions come too late. VW once developed the XDS electronic differential lock for the GTI. That now comes standard on every Golf. I’m driving in Sardinia, great winding roads and tarmac. Thanks to the dif lock, understeer is reduced. The Golf lost weight, and you can feel that. As an extra, you can get a system that changes the character of the car. The Golf comes with 6 different engines. An 1.2 TSI with 85 or 115 HP. An 1.4 TSI with 122 or 140 HP. There’s a 1.6 TDI with 105 HP and this 2.0 TDI has 150 HP. All engines, exept the smallest, can be ordered with a DSG
automatic double clutch. It’s not a revolution, but it should not be. It’s a decent car, even better than the previous one. More spacious, better equipped without being more expensive. Airco is standard on all versions. So it will be a success, of course. Still, it lacks the charmes of the Giulietta or the 1-series. In fact, it’s a bit boring. It is a decent car. Like decent people, decent cars are a bit of a bore. + Spacious in the back + Well equipped – Boring – Multimedia not very ergonomical .
