This generation Polo from 2009-2014 is a great partner. The car has grown up, almost a Golf. More so, a Golf 3 (I know, that was a long time ago) is the same size. This Polo is a sales success. It was the best sold car in the Netherlands. Small diesels were road tax exempt back then. People could not ignore this combination. Various other engines were available. The smaller ones have 3 cylinders, but you could save for a 4-cylinder. Up ’til the Polo GTI with 178 hp. ENGINES gasoline, diesel There’s a lot of second-hand Polos for sale on AutoScout. Over 1,600. That’s a lot, so there’s a wide choice. 39% is a diesel, explained by the road tax exempt Polo BlueMotion.A lot BlueMotions are available second-hand. If you want a more powerful diesel, the choice is limited. If you want an automatic gearbox, only 6% has no clutch pedal. Full-option Polos are rare. Only 16% has satnav, 12% has parking sensors. The car isn’t that big, so that’s no problem. You’ll have to search for heated seats etc. On the other hand, your car can be found with the large number available. Prices start at 8,000 euros. PRICES minimum, average, maximum There’s a lot of BlueMotions with that 3-cylinder TDI. That engine is underpowered for the Polo. It’s not a big car, but such a small engine is no go. Now you’ll have to pay a hefty road tax, I can’t recommend that version. Except when you want to keep it for a long time. There’s so many available that the prices will go down. A POI with low mileage Polo BlueMotions is whether the EGR valve and particulate filter haven’t clogged up.Diesel engines don’t like short trips. It won’t reach the right temperature and won’t regenerate the filter. It’ll clog up, which can be fixed, but worst case scenario it needs changing. There’s not many problems. A rattle in the dashboard is a lose fuel line. You can fix that yourself in 5 minutes, the dealer even faster. Some engines have issues. The TSI engines are known for stretched timing chains. Chain tensioners have to make sure the tension is right. If they don’t, there’ll be a rattle on a cold start; an important signal. If you hear it, start looking. When the timing belt loses too much tension, it’ll skip. The moving parts won’t be in sync, destroying the engine. That’s expensive. There’s horror stories about the older GTI’s oil consumption, cylinder failures and engines that need replacing. When opting for an older GTI, beware. Check its history, what’s
been wrong with it. Maybe nothing. Some cars got a timing chain fix under warranty. Ask if it still has its old timing chain and how to deal with it when buying. The naturally aspirated 1.4 gasoline eats ignition coils. There’s 4, so that can get expensive. Of course, that won’t happen every week. That’s it for the Polo’s problems. It’s not that bad. This is a reliable car. This car is a pretty GTI, a fun car. 178 hp, which is plenty for this type of car. Only available with the automatic DSG gearbox. The GTI usually has more features, as does this car.It handles great.
